Kingfisher Class Year 4 and 5: Home Learning

Kingfisher Class Home Learning

This page will be updated weekly with new activities for the Year 4 and 5 children of Kingfisher Class to complete for their home learning.

Monday 13th July

Hello Kingfishers!

We have finished our penultimate week of home learning and we move into our final week as Kingfisher Class 19-20. I have really enjoyed reading your myths this week: you have all worked so hard on your writing this year. I've been very impressed! I was also impressed with your ancient Greek theatre masks. You all added wonderful facial expressions to your masks and added lots of detail - they were amazing! smiley

I have prepared a few bits and bobs for you to complete next week which you can find below. However, as it is your final week, the lessons are slightly different from previous weeks. I have included your maths and Early Bird Maths work as usual but your other activities are based on reflection and looking back on our year as a class. smiley

Hello Kingfishers!

You have had another super week and I have been very impressed with the work that has been added to the blog as well as the excellent work sent to me on Seesaw. Your diary entries have been amazing and I have been so pleased to see you all using the punctuation that you have learnt throughout the year in your writing. I have also enjoyed looking at the ancient Greek armour that you have created. The shield designs, in particular, have been fantastic and they have all been unique. Please continue adding all of the activities that you complete at home to your blog - it is great to see all of the fun and interesting things that you have been doing.

I have prepared some more work for you to complete next week which you can find below.

Don't forget to look out for the weekly challenge which will be ready for you during the week. Have a lovely weekend, Kingfishers.

Over the last five or six weeks, we have been learning about the ancient Greeks and reading lots of Greek myths including Perseus, King Midas and Pandora's Box. We have also created some amazing mythical creatures and wonderful heroes. This week, I am only setting you one task: to write your very own myth. You can use the myths that you have read to inspire you and, if you want to, you can also use the mythical creatures and heroes - which you spent hours creating - as the main characters in your myth.

Hello Kingfishers!

What a week! Lots of you will be celebrating Glasthomebury Festival this weekend which is great to see. smiley I have really enjoyed seeing all of the heroes that you have created, ready for your stories in a few weeks. You have all done a fabulous job of identifying the different Greek gods and goddesses and your storyboards for Perseus are excellent. Also, I have to say, your Answer Smash questions were amazing and so much fun to work out. Please continue adding all of the activities that you complete at home to your blog - it is great to see all of the fun and interesting things that you have been doing.

For your first lesson this week, I would like you to create a provisions list for Jason's trip aboard the Argo. In your second lesson, your task is to write a diary entry for Jason to describe his time on the Argo as he searches for the Golden Fleece. I have also included a SPAG lesson for you. This week, the SPAG lesson focuses on statements, exclamations, commands and questions.

Hello Kingfishers!

We have had another fantastic week of learning. I have really enjoyed seeing the wonderful, mysterious mythical creatures and reading about them in your non-chronological reports. It has also been great to see some of you having a go at the Kingfisher Class Home Pentathlon. If you were unable to complete the home pentathlon this week due to the poor weather, you could always have a go at it next week or some time in the future (whenever we have a day with some sunshine). smiley I will leave a copy of the instructions at the top of the page next to your spelling list in case you want to have a go. Please continue to add all of the fun activities that you complete at home to your blog - the Kingfishers and I love to see the amazing work that you are producing.

I have prepared some more work for you to complete next week which you can find below.

This week, we will be focusing on the Greek myth 'King Midas' which you can now find on your Bug Club accounts. For your first lesson this week, I would like you to explain what you would wish for if, like King Midas, you were granted one wish. In your second lesson, your task is to write a script for your very own radio show where you will be interviewing King Midas. I have also included a SPAG lesson for you. This week, the SPAG lesson reintroduces you to the colon and demonstrates how this piece of punctuation can be used in your writing.

Hello Kingfishers!

It has been great to see you all taking part in our work about Ancient Greece. I have been very impressed with the Mount Olympus designs and the amount of detail that has been included on the Greek vases. It has also been lovely to see some of you getting board games out about Ancient Greece or even having a go at making your very own Greek vase out of salt dough. Keep adding all of these fun activities to your blog - the Kingfishers and I love to see the fun activities that you have been doing at home.

I have prepared some more work for you to complete next week which you can find below.

Don't forget to look out for the weekly challenge which will be ready for you during the week. Have a lovely weekend, Kingfishers.

This week, I have added the following two Greek myths to your Bug Club accounts: 'Daedalus and Icarus' and 'Arachne the Spinner'. You will need to read 'Daedalus and Icarus' to support you with your work which requires you to create your own mythical creature and write about them. However, you will be completing a comprehension for 'Arachne the Spinner' so the myth on Bug Club is just there for you to read as an optional task.

History Home Learning - WB 08.06.20

Monday 1st June

Hello Kingfishers!

Welcome back - I hope you all had a lovely half-term! I can't believe that we are in Summer Term two already. This half-term we were supposed to learn about the history of the Olympic Games as the Tokyo 2020 Olympics were taking place over in Japan. However, the Olympics have been postponed until 2021 so we will learn about the history of the Olympics next year when we can watch the events in school at the same time. smiley

This got me thinking about other topics that we could focus on instead: Ancient Greece! We can learn about how the Olympics started all those years ago and, at the same time, learn about the Greek gods and how the Greeks changed the world. I thought this would be a perfect final topic for you.

Your English lessons this week focus on Mount Olympus, the home of the Greek gods, as well as the myths 'In the Beginning' and 'Pandora's Box'. You can also work on your new topic in our history lesson about the important events in Ancient Greece and, to top it all off, you can have a go at creating your own Greek vase design in art.

I hope you enjoy your first week back. Don't forget to log in to Bug Club every day and complete your TT Rockstars. Our target to beat this week is 7,920 correct answers! If you all join in, I think you can beat it. smiley Remember, we would love to see the work that you complete at home so don't forget to share it with us on the blog or with me on Seesaw.

Hello Kingfishers!

I am so pleased to see more of you logging into Bug Club and TT Rockstars again! This week, as a class, you managed to accumulate 7,752 correct answers on TTRS. That is a phenomenal number. I wonder if you could beat it as a class next week? We would need almost everyone joining in to beat a score like that. I've seen some fantastic comic strips this week which have been so much fun to read and I've really enjoyed seeing the nature mandalas and leaf tiles that you have created.

I have prepared some more work for you to complete next week which you can find below.

Don't forget to look out for the weekly challenge which will be ready for you during the week.

A huge well done to everybody in Kingfisher Class. You have all been working really hard over the last two weeks. As we should be having better weather this week, I have included more practical lessons. Lessons where you can work in the garden and in the kitchen which will be a nice change from working on a screen or on worksheets everyday.

Check out the optional art activity this week. I think you will have a lot of fun with this one. laugh

Instructions can be written for a variety of reasons. You may use instructions to help you build a new piece of furniture, to help you fix something that is broken, to make your favourite food or to even help you find your way to another world. The Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 examples below have been added just to provide an example - to show you how you could lay your work out and the vocabulary that is often found in a set of instructions. There is more information in the document 'LO: English - Instruction Writing'.
